Hazel Foster was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1885. She received her Ph. D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1932 and worked as a Presbyterian minister and professor of religion throughout the United States. She was active in a number of organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Quaker Fellowship, and the American Civil Liberties Union, and served as religious contacts chairman for the National Board of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
